Layered like lasagna but half the work — ziti, meaty red sauce, and three cheeses with a creamy middle layer that makes people ask what the secret is.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ziti pasta
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 48 oz marinara sauce
  • 6 oz provolone cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
  • 6 oz mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese

Steps

  1. 1Heat the oven to 350°F and butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. 2Boil the ziti until just al dente, about 8 minutes — it keeps cooking in the oven. Drain.
  3. 3Meanwhile, brown the beef with the onion in a big skillet, breaking it up as it cooks. Stir in the garlic for the last minute, then pour in the marinara and simmer 15 minutes.
  4. 4Spread half the ziti in the dish. Lay the provolone slices over it, spread the sour cream on top, then ladle on half the meat sauce.
  5. 5Add the rest of the ziti, then the mozzarella, then the remaining sauce. Finish with the Parmesan.
  6. 6Bake about 30 minutes, until the cheese melts and the sauce bubbles at the edges. Rest 5 minutes before serving.
