Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 5 tbsp butter
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Steps

  1. 1Whisk the warm milk, yeast, and sugar in a big bowl and let it sit 5 minutes until foamy. Whisk in the egg and melted butter.
  2. 2Stir in the flour and salt until a shaggy dough forms, then knead 6 to 8 minutes (by hand or mixer) until smooth and slightly tacky.
  3. 3Roll the dough on a floured counter into a 14-by-9-inch rectangle. Spread with the soft butter, then sprinkle evenly with the brown sugar and cinnamon, pressing gently so it sticks.
  4. 4Roll up tightly from a long side and slice into 12 rolls — unflavored dental floss makes the cleanest cut. Arrange in a buttered 9-by-13 pan.
  5. 5Cover and let rise in a warm spot about 45 minutes, until puffy and touching. Heat the oven to 350°F near the end.
  6. 6Bake 22 to 25 minutes until golden on top. Meanwhile beat the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla until fluffy.
  7. 7Frost the rolls while warm so it melts into the swirls. Serve the same day — as if they would last longer.
